Introducing the all-new Remember The Milk for Gmail

A little background

Way back in 2007, we launched the first Remember The Milk for Gmail — a browser add-on that allowed you to manage your tasks in Gmail. Google provided an experimental API that made this possible (thanks, Google!), but as anyone who used the add-on might remember, it was a little bit fragile. Any time that Google updated Gmail’s code, we had to race to update our add-on’s code too. Over the years, we updated our code for 700 (!) different version of Gmail.

When Google launched the new Gmail last year, we were sad that our add-on would no longer be supported. We needed to figure out another way to integrate with Gmail (tasks and email belong together!), and luckily Google now has an official way to develop add-ons for Gmail.

Introducing the new Gmail add-on

With that official way to develop add-ons, we’re excited today to be launching the all-new Remember The Milk for Gmail! When you read a message in Gmail, you’ll now be able to create a task from your email. To get started:

  1. Add the Remember The Milk for Gmail add-on to your Gmail account.
  2. Open an email message and click on the Remember The Milk icon on the right-hand side of Gmail.
  3. Enter your task’s details. You can include task name, priority, list, due date, tags, and note. You can also choose to include the email content as a note, and give the task to a contact if you need help with it.
  4. Click Add Task once you’re done.
  5. That’s it! Your task is now in Remember The Milk, so you won’t forget it. :)

What else can the add-on do?

With this new add-on, you can quickly add tasks to Remember The Milk without leaving your inbox. But what about managing tasks, as was possible with our old add-on? Unfortunately the official way of developing add-ons for Gmail is a bit more limited than we’d ideally like, which means that it’s only possible to add tasks via the add-on right now. :( We’re hoping that Google will expand what’s possible with Gmail add-ons in the future, as we’d love to grow this feature.

We hope you like the new Remember The Milk for Gmail! If you have any feedback, Bob and the team would love to hear from you.
