Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Leveling up with achievements

Tuesday, August 27, 2013 by Andrew Conkling

Achievements in games are like icing on the cake as you play and can often help keep you coming back. This week's tip, shared by kittenrose, suggests a simple way to use them in everyday life, where they can be even more motivating! :)

So I'm a bit of losery gamer geek kinda person. And I am motivated purely by game style points and quests. ;) So here's the idea, you set tasks for things you want to achieve with the tag 'achievements'. Then you have two Smart Lists:

  1. Pending achievements. Mini self-set quests you've embarked on:
    status:incomplete and tag:achievements
  2. Achievements. A hall of fame of how awesome you are:
    status:completed and tag:achievements

Achievements can be anything from run 10km, to cooking a new dish. Whatever you want. But it's a nice little motivator to give yourself a few challenges. Particularly when you factor in that your challenges can have due dates. A bit of extra friendly pressure :)

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Maintaining warranties on jewelry

Tuesday, August 20, 2013 by Andrew Conkling

Bob takes care of his jewelry

Warranties are very helpful: if something breaks, you can fix it! Of course, if your warranty has a renewal/inspection period, there's a lot of incentive to keep it up. This week's tip, shared by thisjones, offers a simple way to use repeating tasks to make sure you keep up your warranties!

My hubby has always been very good about getting the added warranty when investing in jewelry for me as a gift. This is great to have in case something happens to my jewelry through everyday wear, but the challenge is remembering to take my jewelry in to be inspected every 6 months to keep the warranty valid.

Thanks to Remember The Milk this isn't a problem any more! When I get a new piece of jewelry, I just enter a task due 6 months from the date that my husband purchased the piece and set it to repeat every 6 months. Instant reminders that can save me a lot of $$ and heartbreak in case something happens to my treasured pieces!

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Razor-sharp focus with Smart Lists

Tuesday, August 13, 2013 by Andrew Conkling

It's handy to collect your tasks in a bunch of lists from all spheres of life. It's also handy to use
Smart Lists to collect sets of tasks across all your lists so you can group them together in different ways.

This week's tip, shared by clziegler, shows how to strike a very specific balance: finding just the tasks you want, just when you want them.

I really LOVE the fact that Smart Lists can be created to show EXACTLY what you want to see — no more and no less.

I do our household finances at home on Tuesday nights.

I have a Smart List that lists all the tasks that are due today @home. I also have a Smart List that lists all the tasks that are related to finances on a separate Smart List.

It really, really, really drove me nuts to see the finances tasks on my @home list because I only needed to see them when I sat down to actually DO finances. And when I sat down to DO finances, I didn't want to get distracted by all the OTHER things I needed to do.

I also recently added a life insurance list which I also wanted to show up on the finances list but NOT on the @home list.

I had a hard time nailing down the syntax to get exactly what I wanted, and Brendan on the Remember The Milk team helped me nail it down.

I share my two lists because I think they really showcase just what you can do.

I'll warn you — the syntax is pretty organic — I just kept shoving things on the end as I clarified what I wanted to see. There is probably a much more elegant way to phrase them… but again I think that highlights the beauty of RTM. [Looks good to us here! Bob approves. :)]

Here is my Today @home list syntax:

(list:NEXT_ACTION AND location:@home) OR (tag:monthend AND dueWithin:"3 days of today" AND location:@home) OR (dueBefore:tomorrow OR tag:Next) AND location:@home AND NOT list:finances AND NOT list:"s_life ins"

Here is my Finances this week syntax:

due:never OR (tag:monthend AND dueWithin:"3 days of today") OR (dueWithin:"1 week of today") AND location:@home AND (list:finances OR list:"s_life ins")

Brendan, I will bless your name every Tuesday night for many years to come!

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: A quick look at new tasks with a Smart List

Tuesday, August 6, 2013 by Andrew Conkling

There are a variety of ways to add tasks quickly — a look at our Apps page will show you many of them!

Following up on that, this week's tip, shared by mvl1729, shows a quick way to see just those tasks you added today — to add a tag, move them to another list, or even just to complete them! :)

I use RTM on several devices, in Gmail (by using the excellent RTM for Gmail add-on) and through the website.

Many times, I just quickly create a task when I'm thinking about it. To ensure I use the correct due dates, tags and repeat intervals I made it a habit to go through my new tasks daily.

To help me do this, I created a Smart List CreatedToday to display my new tasks:

added:today

It's very simple, but I find this is one of the lists I use most often.
