Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Start your list with the least important task

Tuesday, June 29, 2010 by Emily Boyd

We all know the feeling — your task list is just so long that you have absolutely no idea where to start (and you're wondering if heading straight back home to bed is a valid option). Try this tip shared by joheine the next time you're having trouble getting started:

Some days I feel that it is difficult to get started on my way too long task list. To get the ball rolling I sometimes start with the smallest and least important task. Although it sounds counterproductive, it seems to improve my efficiency. Once you get going, you usually feel energetic enough to approach the bigger tasks.

There is no view for this in RTM. You just have to start at the bottom of your daily list if you sort your tasks after priority.

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Adding tasks via text message

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 by Emily Boyd

As sandiegan discovered, there's a neat trick with Remember The Milk for Twitter — adding tasks super quickly via text message!

Bob texts his tasks

So you don't have a smartphone — big whoop. It's still possible to remember "Oh, I have to do ____" and add it to RTM without having to write it down for later using text messages. Here's how to do it:

  1. Create a Twitter account (if you don't already have one).
  2. Add it to the box on this page.
  3. Follow @rtm.
  4. When @rtm follows you back, send the following tweet with the code given to you on the services page "d rtm ".
  5. Set up your mobile phone with Twitter so that you can update your status via text message.

Now you can easily add tasks to Remember The Milk via your cell, all through texts! See the different ways to add lists, tags, due dates, and other fields on this page.

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Shared lists for getting housework done

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 by Emily Boyd

This handy tip from kerobb is a great way to use shared lists and keep on top of your chores. Thanks to this tip, I've shared lists with Bob to get him to help with the cleaning around here — he's surprisingly good at doing the dishes!

Bob's helpful around the house

My husband and I both work full-time and don't always share the same days off. I created a list for our weekly housework chores and shared it with him. This way when one of us completes a chore like cleaning the ensuite shower, it is off the list for the week and we don't repeat the same chore and always know what still needs to be done. I love the weeks when his two days off are before my two days off!

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Top 5 tasks

Tuesday, June 8, 2010 by Emily Boyd

Having trouble deciding what to focus on? Keep getting distracted by the not-so-important tasks on your list? kathryn.white shared a great tip on selecting your "top 5" tasks to help you stay on track:

After reading Michael Heppell's book on How To Be Brilliant, one of his suggestions is to have 5 tasks you write each night that ought to be completed the next day (if you don't complete them all, that's ok, they just carry over to the next day). Sometimes, with multiple lists I find it hard to follow what is really important.

I have created a tag called: 5Top which I tag the 5 most important tasks with. I also make them Priority 1 so they stand out in any other list (I don't tend to use Priority 1 for anything else), and have a Smart List called Top 5 which just shows tasks with that tag. Simple – but effective.

Each day, I can review the Top 5 and if some of them got completed the day before I can add new ones. If too many have crept in (having lost count!), I can re-prioritise. With so many lists and so many tasks sometimes I just need a snapshot of what is really important. Limiting it to 5 makes it less daunting and helps me to refocus.

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Minimize your food wastage

Tuesday, June 1, 2010 by Emily Boyd

Ah, what to have for dinner tonight… it's always a tricky question (and even more so when you have a fussy stuffed monkey in your household). zeebacca uses Remember The Milk to keep track of food purchases and expiry dates — a handy way to answer the "what's for dinner?" question and minimize food wastage. Sweet!

Bob decides what's for dinner... icecream?

Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight?

A nice serving of Jack Daniel's Fully Cooked Barbecue Chicken I bought at CostCo about a month ago.

Why am I telling you this? I use RTM for grocery lists and when I stand in line to check out, I add the expiration dates of certain perishables to their tasks and get a reminder telling me it's time to EAT or waste the food!

As a single guy, my disorganization in the kitchen is legendary and I have tossed $1,000s worth of food in the past… not anymore.
