Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Keeping your wallet small and tidy

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 by Emily Boyd

Got a wallet so full of random items that it barely fits in your pocket? This week's tip, shared by RTM user chris089, is for you.

Bob keeps his wallet tidy

Do you know the feeling when you search for something in your wallet and you realize that for the last two months your collected a whole bunch of totally useless crap (well, some of it might have been useful back then, but just isn't anymore, e.g. parking tickets…) and thus can't find it? Happens to me all the time.

I now use a RTM task that reminds me to throw away that stuff every 2 weeks. It also has a time estimate of "5 minutes" so it will show up on a smart list that shows me tasks that I can do in less than 15 minutes which I check for todo items when I have a little bit of spare time where it's just not productive to start any "real" work.

Oh, and while you're at it, you can take pictures and claim the crap in your wallet to be "art": http://www.allthecrapinmywallet.co.uk/ ;)

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Creating a Borrowed/Lent list

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 by Emily Boyd

If you have friends or family who like to make a habit of "borrowing" your stuff, this cool tip shared by RTM user ahojohnebrause might help you out.

Borrowed/Lent List

Recently, I remembered that a buddy of mine is in debt to me for a crate of beer, so I made a task in RTM to remind myself to remind him next time we met.

After that, I got thinking, and created a list called "Borrowed / Lent" where this task found its home. I then took a stroll through my appartment and recorded all things that were a) missing or b) in my appartment, yet not legally in my posession. I created a task for every one of them and either tagged them with "borrowed" or "lent", as well as with a tag of the corresponding buddy's name.

This way, I can easily find out which things to throw in my backpack's general direction the next time I visit my mom, for example.

I also tend to give these tasks a due date, so that I can nudge people to give me my stuff back.

You'll be amazed how fast this list actually grows…

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Organizing your coupons

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 by Emily Boyd

Like Bob (pictured right), it sounds like RTM user despise had some coupon management issues. This handy tip, shared by despise on the Tips & Tricks forum, promises to help you remember your coupons before they expire.

Bob organizes his coupons

When I come across a coupon for something I don't need to buy on a regular basis (i.e. hair styling products) or don't plan on using immediately (i.e. restaurant coupon) and stash it away, there's a good chance I'm going to forget about – until after it expires. Enter Remember The Milk.

If I find one of these coupons, I create a new task and title it with a description of the coupon ("$1.00 off XYZ Product") and make the expiration the due date OR when I plan on using it. Know someone who'd like to go to a certain restaurant for their birthday? Make that the due date. I'll then tag it with "coupon." If it's for a specific store, you can add a location too. To take it a step further, I created a new list called Junk Drawer. Right now I'm unsure if there's anything else I can stash in that list, but no big deal. It serves its purpose: keeping my Daily list from overflowing with things I don't need to see all the time.

iPhone app update: Badge updates with Push Notifications, new languages, and making your iPhone "moo"

Monday, July 13, 2009 by Emily Boyd

The latest version of the Remember The Milk app is now available on the App Store — yay! Read on to learn what's new in version 1.1.1.

Badge updates

Alert Sound

The app badge is a handy way to know how many tasks need your attention: it can show the number of tasks due today, or total number of incomplete tasks. Until now, this number could only count the number of tasks on your iPhone; if you'd added tasks to the web app (or one of our many other services :), or someone sent you a new task, or if you simply hadn't launched the app that day, this number could be out-of-date.

With Push Notifications, we can now instantly update the badge number on your iPhone or iPod touch whenever it needs to change. Added a task online? No problem, we'll push out an update straight to your device. Bob sent a task reminding you to buy bananas? That's okay, we'll add that to your task count. We'll also send your device an updated number each day at midnight (your time) to make sure you have an up-to-date count of tasks due today. To change your preference for the app badge, visit the Settings screen in the app.

New languages

We love making the app available in as many languages as possible, and we're happy to add Czech and Greek to the 17 languages already supported. This app version also updates the localizations for Danish, Finnish, Russian and Spanish. Interested in helping to make the app available in your language? We'd really appreciate any help — please check out our online translation program.

Making your iPhone "moo"

We mentioned a silly bug in version 1.1.0 that prevented the Push Notification alerts from having sound. Not only has this issue been fixed, but you can now choose between multiple sounds: from a boring ol' iPhone alert sound to a musical cow bell, or, yes, even a "moo". To change your preference, just visit the Settings screen in the app.

Alert Sound

We hope you enjoy these updates! Want to learn more about the app in general? Check out the Remember The Milk for iPhone & iPod touch section of the site.

Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Staying on top of postponed tasks

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 by Emily Boyd

That little "Postpone" button can be rather tempting at times. RTM user bradlowens shares this tip for keeping postponed tasks in check.

Postponed search

A saved custom search I use in RTM is to search for those tasks that I keep pushing off. I use the search postponed:"> 7″ to see any tasks that I've been pushing off for a week or more. If they need to be done, I set them as high priority so I get to them right away or if I've decided they aren't important, I just delete them.

This should help you keep from pushing off tasks later and later.
